English Police Boat Championships 2015

The 2015 EPFFA Boat Championships were held at Draycote Reservoir on 23rd April 2015 and attracted a total of 51 anglers although two were forced to withdraw on the morning of the event due to illness.

On practice day some fish were found and and some thought they had identified sound techniques and tactics for the match day but as on most occasions, the weather conditions on the match day were totally different and the tactics had to be changed.

The majority of competitors bagged their 4 fish and no one failed to catch!

The tactics varied, some pulled blobs on sinking lines and some used buzzers on floating lines with long leaders,  The two main areas of interest where fish seemed to be found were the Draycote Bank and Toft Bay.

A variety of other methods were used and were fairly successful but from what I saw in and around the Toft Bay area, Buzzers on floating lines was the most successful method.

I had the pleasure (or not) of seeing Chad Critchley hauling them out by the bucket full however, he was out done and came second to Dave Summers who had a total of 23 fish for a total weigh of  50lb 13oz

Nick Lant had the heaviest 4 fish bag, with a weight of 15lb 2oz.

The heaviest fish was caught by myself on a buzzer in Tofts, a fine rainbow of 6lb 9oz.

The full result sheet is attached

As you are aware I along with Malcolm will be running 2015 National Championships at Draycote and the entry forms have been circulated to the Area Reps and on this web site.

As ever money will be tight this year, with the majority of the funds being directed towards the two British events and a small contribution to the River Championships in Scotland. The National as ever will have no additional funding, whilst the The Five Nations (Home International) at Brenig Reservoir in September  where some anglers may require to stay an additional night, may need some funding to assist. Dave and I will liaise to work out these additional costs probably sooner rather than later, to make sure we have sufficient funds in place to make the event a success.

Dates for your diaries

  • Thursday 23rd April  English Police Boat Championships at Draycote Reservoir

  • Monday 27th / Tuesday 28th April  Royal Navy v Police Challenge match at Draycote Reservoir

  • Thursday 14th May Scottish Police Championships  at the Lake of Menteith

  • Sunday 7th - Tuesday 9th June Services Championships at Grafham Water

  • Wednesday 10th / Thursday 11th June P.S. UK National Championships at Draycote Reservoir

  • Monday 29th June - Wednesday 1st July  P.S. UK River Championships on the River Clyde

  • Monday 7th - Friday 11th September  Five Nations (Home International) at Brenig Reservoir & River De

Now I appreciate at our A.G.M. it was agreed that we would scrap the medals for the Home International in order to save money, albeit it was agreed that the River Competition medals would remain. Whilst negotiating with the Trophy Centre, who have provided fleeces for the British team for the last eight years, they have increased my overall discount from 15 to 20%......I think they thought I was stopping the medal order altogether........anyway leave me to juggle the medal order I will make savings, plus with the "Five Nations" it would be nice to do something commemorative.

The British Team : Capt. Gary Haskins & Vice Capt. Jim McBride are joined by Stevie Rea, Darrell McKinlay, Gary Smith, John Brown, Martin Allen (PSNI); Chris Webster (Cheshire), Chris Reeves (Met), Marian Davies (N.Wales), Dave Williams & Gary Mann (Dave,Gary probably with a little research I would have found your forces and contact email addresses......and Dave I put your card somewhere safe)

Can  I ask Regional Secretaries to check the above list, if one of your anglers appears in the British team, please forward this email on to them. I then need each angler to respond to me with their availability for the dates 27th / 28th April; Royal Navy match / 7th - 9th June; Service Championships, provide me with a contact email / mobile telephone number, neck/chest size for their shirt. I will then speak with Gary Haskins (Capt.) advise him of anglers available only eight anglers are required for April, though this may increase to 10 depending on the Navy, all anglers will be required for June.

I will touch base with the majority of you over the next week and slowly start to get things moving. I have a couple of matters to address this year Tim Ashman & Colin Jones stood down as Regional Secretaries in 2013, we still have to acknowledge the work they done for the section. I may invite them as guests to one of our Championships this year. Jules and Roy have both intimated that they are standing down this year, with Phil Harding and Bob Casey taking over their respective regions from June, so again change in our committee.

I have been contacted by a John Hanson from the English Fly Fishing Association (a lot of good anglers in this association) wishing to fish against the police, not wanting to chase people away (remember the Police Sport UK's desire for greater links with the public.....plus it may increase my budget.........anyway thinking out of the box........how about a match against this association on the practice day of the National, the Regional Winners that fish the Individual Competition could make up the team, on what would be the practice day....up for discussion. I have told John it wouldn't happen till 2016.....however invited him to enter a small team into the Royal Navy v Police challenge match, which he is going to do.

In 2016.....Nigel has offered to run the nationals at Chew Valley, Kenny will have the Five Nations at the Lake of Menteith. Gentlemen I anticipate that if you haven't already that you are looking at booking boats and liaising with hotels regarding these events. Interestingly the River Championships, which moves location every two years will complete its second year in Scotland this year, our colleagues in Northern Ireland are making inquiries into the possibility of hosting the event in 2016/17, which will be fantastic if achieved.

As you can see.....lots of information and stuff buzzing about in your secretaries head, including who will we get to replace me when I stand down....this is me in my 10th year.....I feel it should be a serving officer that performs my role, so if elected in June you will have me for another year.......but now is the time to find someone to shadow me for a smooth transition.......its a bit like Dr Who, as the fourth Secretary I'm Tom Barker.....which means we need a Richard Griffiths.

Yours as ever in fishing and obviously Dr Who...!

Annual General Meeting

The 2015 AGM will be held at 7.0pm on Wednesday 22nd April 2015 at the Whitefields Hotel and Golf Club near Draycote the evening before the Championship.

If you have any items for the Agenda - for discussion at the AGM then these must be received by me before Sunday 5th April 2015 so that I can circulate Agenda Items etc in good time to all the members.

English Boat Championships 2014

The 2014 event will be held at Rutland Water on Thursday 24th April 2014 but given initial indications suggest that we may have more entrants than Rutland can currently accommodate. Last year there were about 66 boats on the water but this year the numbers have been reduced to 60 boats facilitating 120 anglers.

I have spoken to Rutland Water and they are able to bring 3 further boats from other waters to accommodate another 6 anglers so the max number will be 126 anglers at that venue.  It is yet to be decided how we will deal with an over subscription - whether we stick at 126 on a first come first served basis or if we use a second venue and split the event. I have reserved all available boats at Rutland for a practice day on Wednesday 23rd April 2014

We are obviously still in the early stages of organising this event and no final numbers or arrangements have been made, however If we greatly exceed 126 names then we may require entire Individuals / Regions / Forces to compete at an alternative venue (perhaps Grafham / Pitsford / Eyebrook) and the means of deciding who fishes where will have to be decided but if there is a need to split the venues then I believe - for fairness - that the match be split 50/50 with the top 7 rods etc from each venue going forward to represent England later in the year.  The Date that the completed entry form is received (as per this email address) could be used to determine who fishes where on a first come / first served basis.

As indicated above we have not been able to be determine how many people will want to enter the event and rather than stick an absolute limit on it, we want to encourage people to participate and have a chance of representing their country - hence the potential for a second venue to run simultaneously - close by so that we can all join up for a drink and bite to eat afterwards.

We will advise every one of the numbers as soon as we know so that you are able to make your own personal arrangements for the event.

COMPLETED ENTRY FORMS MUST BE RETURNED BY FRIDAY 14th MARCH 2014

Finally if you have any new & unused tackle etc. or bottles of beer, wine or spirits lying in the back of a cupboard that need a new home, please bring them along to the event for raffle prizes. Your support will be appreciated. Click here for an entry form or go to the Forms page.

Any problems please call email me at epffa.sec@gmail.com. Regards to all, Malcolm N.

The National River Championships 2014

The 2014 Rivers Championships have been provisionally booked for the 4th & 5th November at the same venue as last year, the Lazonby beats of the River Eden, near Penrith, Cumbria.  (Grayling Fishing). I have also provisionally booked Dinner, Bed & Breakfast accommodation (12 twin rooms) at the Crown Hotel, Wetheral at a cost of £69.50 per person per night (minimum 2 nights stay).  (The cost includes; 3 course dinner in the restaurant, use of the leisure facilities, use of the drying facilities and storage rooms for equipment, and 10% off all massages!

For further information visit their website; http://www.crownhotelwetheral.co.uk/. This is the nearest hotel (about 9 miles from the fishery) that can accommodate more than 8 people and although a little more expensive, it does look a very good hotel with some nice little frills as indicated above.  I believe that the cost of the fishing will be approx £50 per person - the same as last year but the final costings will be circulated soon. I would appreciate a reply from anyone interested in participating in this event asap so that arrangements can be confirmed with the hotel and fishery.
